Precious Blood Vocation/Formation Conference

Sam D’Angelo of the Atlantic Province sends word about this year’s Precious Blood Vocation/Formation Conference in Toronto. The four-day conference dealt with prospective candidates’ discernment in the area of sexual orientation and ongoing psychosexual and community formation.

Fr. Joseph DiBoveros, CR, presented hypothetical situations of prospective candidates with varying sexual histories. Later he suggested that when a religious community fails to address the marginalization of gays and lesbians a homosexual subculture may form which can have a negative effect on community life. He challenged the participants to greater inclusivity. On the next day Sr. Joyce Lehman, CPPS, led discussions on assessing candidates’ ability to live a celibate life. The final day was given to evaluation and future planning.

Fr. Robert Schreiter, Third Councilor, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Lucerne, Switzerland, for his “pioneering work” in methods of contextual theology and also for pointing to new directions in the areas of intercultural communication, interreligious dialogue and in the theology of mission from a transcultural perspective. The dean of the theological faculty noted that Bob had already begun to reflect on the consequences of globalization for indigenous cultures and for ethnic and religious as well as modern societies at a time when the term “globalization” was scarcely known.

Congratulations, Bob! We are happy for your accomplishments and grateful for your many contributions to our Society and to the Church.

Fr. Phillip Smith, Second Councilor and Secretary General for the past twelve years, has left Rome for the United States and then on to Toronto where he will be pastor of St. Roch’s Church. A member of the Kansas City Province, Phil has worked faithfully at the Generalate in a variety of ways. We wish him well and offer a big “Thanks!” for all that he has done during his two terms here in Rome.

Father Raymond Grevencamp Dies at age 79

In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 25, Father Raymond Grevencamp began his new life in Christ at St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Ohio.

Father Ray was ordained in 1949 and although plagued by health problems during his priestly life had a full and active ministry in parishes and as a health care chaplain. As the notice from the Cincinnati Province noted, his health concerns helped to make him a compassionate and patient minister.

Manolo González and Pilar Aradilla

Participants in the workshop

Paulino Hernández and Diego Muñoz

The Iberian Province sponsored their VI Spirituality Workshop with the theme “Witnesses to the Blood of Christ, yesterday and today.”  The Workshop took place in Cáceres, Spain from November 16-18.  For the first time Adorers of the Blood of Christ and laypeople gave the talks.  The following themes were presented: how St. Gaspar and Blessed Maria de Mattias gave witness to the Blood of Christ; P. Kolbe, Gandhi, Theresa of Calcutta, as witnesses of Christ’s Blood; and how we can be witnesses of the Blood of Christ today.  At the conclusion of the Workshop a commitment to organize a Lay Movement of the Spirituality was made, in order to reflect and to live our spirituality.

July 14

Congratulations to Anthony Fortman, C.PP.S. who will be ordained to the priesthood in the Cincinnati Province today. The ordination will take place in the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul in Ottawa, Ohio. Tony will be the first North American ordained in the Cincinnati Province in eleven years, so there is a special cause for joy and celebration! Congratulations, Fr. Tony, and may you have many years of happy ministry as a Missionary of the Precious Blood!

On Thursday, July 12th, Fr. Angelo Totaro, of the Italian Province, celebrated his 75th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood! The Mass of Thanksgiving was presided by Fr. Angelo, steadied on his feet between D. Giovanni Francilia (the Italian Province Provincial), and Fr. Barry Fischer (Moderator General). The local Ordinary, a group of fellow C.PP.S. missionaries and diocesan clergy were on hand to participate in the celebration in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy in Rimini. D. Angelo is well known for his availability for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and was called in Fr. General's remarks, "an Angel of Peace", which was a phrase used to describe St. Gaspar for his ministry of reconciliation in Sonnino. In his remarks at the end of Mass, Don Angelo said he asked only one thing of God: to live to reach 100 years of age…so as to do more good before he dies. Don Angelo celebrated his 98th birthday in June and is the oldest C.PP.S. member in the world and is still active in ministry!

Following the Eucharistic celebration, we gathered at a Restaurant in the nearby Republic of San Marino to continue the festivities. In the picture we see Don Angelo cutting his anniversary cake!
